Nouvelle incursion dans l'ancien royaume de Siam avec, en guise de viatique, ce disque de 1977, fruit de la collaboration de deux gloires locales. Setha Sirachaya et Chairat Tiebtiem, car tel est leur nom, y parcourent un répertoire connu, sans qu'à aucun moment ne pointe l'ennui auquel s'attache bien des albums comprenant des reprises. Le travail de dépaysement opéré par la fine équipe de la pochette y est pour beaucoup (méconnaissable Dylan). Une dose de kitsch certes, des synthés cheesy comme s'il en pleuvait, mais au-delà, une richesse d'orchestration, une forme de luxuriance pop-folk et un brio singulier. Disque primesautier mais où la mélancolie du chant vient contrebalancer les airs les plus enjoués - ces sonorités enveloppantes d'une langue décidément très mélodieuse - Setha Sirachaya with Chairat Tiebtiem séduit par son brillant creuset d'influences propre à transcender tous les plaisirs coupables.  

Setha Sirachaya and Chairat Tiebtiem or a full-length album of covers filtered through a Thai pop sensibility. By taking classic pop and folk songs and redoing them in a unique lounge-friendly style (ten numbers singing separately by both singers on each side of the record), this Thai band simply recasts the material in an unfamiliar genre, far from the connotation of the term 'cover band' - ok it's not true, but I'm not familiar with the originals. Throughout the LP, the instrumentation is great and professional (arrangements by Pracheen Songpao, former member and leader of The Impossibles), the voices sing with this perfect subdued melancholy beyond the jollity and there is a healthy element of change of scenery in the whole affair. A quite entertaining listen.
